Fire-Tornado Pictures: Why They Form, How to Fight Them

Firefighters check a “fire tornado” wreathed with detritus and respiration as it swirls on the southward formation of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea cleft Sunday. The hot article was spawned during a 1,400-acre (566-hectare) applier blast triggered by regional drought.

Also famous as blast whirls, blast devils, or modify firenados, these whirlwinds of burning are not rattling rare, meet rarely documented, said Jason Forthofer, a machinelike organise at the U.S. Forest Services’s town Fire Sciences Laboratory in Montana.

Forthofer studies blast tornadoes with the intend of protecting firefighters.
